ELON, N.C. – The Hofstra women's basketball season came to a close in the Colonial Athletic Association First Round against the No. 7 seeded Elon Phoenix at the Schar Center on Wednesday evening. Hofstra fell against the Championship hosts by a score of 71-51.
Redshirt sophomore
Jaylen Hines led the Pride with 20 points (9-of-10 FG) and 11 rebounds. Senior
Sandra Karsten was also effective all night long with 14 points (6-of-12 FG) six rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Hofstra also got nine points and eight rebounds from senior
Marianne Kalin.
After Elon opened up the contest with a layup, Hofstra quickly answered with a 7-0 run with 7:17 in the first. Hofstra held on to that advantage until the 2:19 mark when Elon took a 13-12 lead but the Phoenix ended the quarter on an 8-0 spurt to make the score 17-12 through the first 10 minutes.
Elon increased that run to 14-0 into the third minute of the second quarter, opening up the frame with six-straight points. Karsten knocked down a three-pointer and Hines added a layup on Hofstra's next possession, but the Phoenix took command and scored the final 10 points of the half, increasing the lead to 34-17.
As a team, the Pride shot a game-best 60 percent in the third quarter (9-of-15 FG). Karsten scored nine of Hofstra's 19 points in the stanza and was a perfect 4-of-4 from the field with one three-pointer. In the final frame, Hofstra got some life with a 6-0 run that included a three-pointer from redshirt junior guard
Ana Hernandez Gil, but Elon stayed in control and moved on to the quarterfinal round.
Hofstra concludes its season with a 3-27 record while finishing 0-18 in the CAA.
