MLAX: Offensive Outbreak Leads to Big Hofstra Win Over St. John's

QUEENS, N.Y. – Ryan Tierney posted seven points on four goals and three assists while Whit Stopak also scored four goals as a 13-goal first half propelled Hofstra to a 19-9 win over St. John's on Tuesday from DaSilva Memorial Field in Queens, New York.

The win moves the Pride to 4-3 on the year, while the Red Storm drops to 3-4 with the loss.

"I was happy we bounced back after a tough loss against Ohio State over the weekend. I though we put together as close to 60 minutes of lacrosse as we could today," said head coach Seth Tierney following the team's win. "I'm proud of today's victory. Anytime you play in a local rivalry, you know you're going to get their best punch, so I'm glad with the way the guys played and how they responded."

In his first collegiate start, Colton Rudd scored the first goal of the game four minutes into the opening quarter, sparking a 5-0 run to start the game for the Pride. A pair of Tierney goals, plus scores from Justin Sykes and Sterlyn Ardrey, helped give Hofstra a lead it would never relinquish.

The Red Storm closed to within three goals, but the Pride put the game well out of reach with eight consecutive goals in the second quarter. Ardrey's second goal of the contest at 10:26 sparked the run that gave the Pride a commanding 13-3 lead going into halftime. Stopak scored three of the team's five goals during this run, while Tierney, Sykes, Riley Forte, and Kyle Steinbach all found the back of the net for Hofstra in the second quarter.

St. John's scored the first two goals of the third quarter, but Hofstra responded with two goals of its own from the sticks of Stopak and Rudd to make the score 15-5. Following a St. John's man-up goal, Hofstra scored the final two goals of the quarter inside two minutes, with Sykes and Rudd adding to their tallies.

Joe Elarde came off the bench and scored his first goal of the season just over a minute into the fourth quarter, while Tierney scored his fourth of the game shortly after for the final Hofstra scores of the contest. St. John's scored the final three goals of the day, but the game was well out of reach for the hosts by that point.

Michael Altmann dished out two assists in the big win for the Pride, while Ryan Sheridan and Cooper Trepeta added one assist each on the day. Brian Herber went 21-31 from the face-off X and led all players with 13 ground balls. Eric Wenz caused two Red Storm turnovers in addition to picking up five ground balls and creating one Pride goal. In goal, Bobby Casey made 13 saves for the Pride and picked up one loose ball. Mac Gates also saw time between the pipes today and made one save.

For the Red Storm, Joe Madsen finished as the team's leading scorer with three tallies, while brother Mike finished with two goals. Brody Agres made five saves in the first half for St. John's, while Gavin Catalano played the second half and made eight stops.

Providence is next on the docket for Hofstra as the Pride travels to Rhode Island for the non-conference match-up on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Friars (5-1) enter Saturday's game at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium on a two-game winning streak, and have split the last four meetings with the Pride, including an 11-10 decision in favor of Providence in 2019.

"Providence is playing really well right now. They're moving the ball around, they've got a number of guys that can score," said Tierney. "They're a blue-collar team, and it's going to be a battle."

Notes:
-The 19 goals were the most scored in a single game this season since the Pride scored 21 on February 8 vs. Wagner.
-Tierney now stands third all-time in goals scored in a career (121) and fifth all-time for points in a career (186).
-Today's win gives Hofstra an all-time record of 17-5 against St. John's, and was the 10th straight meeting between the two schools.
