Stony Brook, NY - Senior
Ryan Tierney had three goals and one assist, while junior
Riley Forte posted a career-high four points on two goals and two assists, but it wasn't enough as the Hofstra men's lacrosse team fell to Stony Brook, 14-11, on Tuesday evening at LaValle Stadium in The Long Island Rivalry, presented by The Greene Turtle.
Hofstra falls to 2-2 with the loss, while Stony Brook improved to 3-1.
Stony Brook opened up the scoring just over three minutes into the contest before Hofstra answered with three goals of its own to take a 3-1 lead with 7:35 left in the opening stanza. Tierney got the run started and would be joined by sophomore
Whit Stopak and Forte. The game would be knotted at four after a 3-1 Stony Brook run culminated with a goal from Cory Vanginhoven at the 2:51 mark of the first quarter. The Pride was able to retake a two-goal advantage at 7-5 after Tierney scored again and then freshman
Kyle Steinbach notched his first career goal with 7:07 left in the first half. The Seawolves had an answer, though, and scored the final three goals of the half to take a narrow one-goal lead into the break.
Junior
James Philbin tied the score to open the third quarter as he scored off an assist from freshman
Sam Lutfi with 9:49 left in the quarter. Stony Brook responded, and scored two straight to retake the lead, but a Stopak goal closed the gap to one, 10-9, with 4:22 remaining. The Seawolves added a pair of goals in the final four minutes of the quarter to take a three-goal advantage into the fourth quarter. Stony Brook pushed the lead to four goals, 13-9, early in the fourth quarter. Down by two Hofstra had one last run in them as sophomore
Sterlyn Ardrey scored the Pride's 10th goal of the game and Steinbach added another with 3:37 left to make it 13-11. That would be as close as Hofstra would get, though, as the Seawolves added one more goal in the final couple of minutes.
Stopak finished with three points on two goals and an assist, while Philbin (1G, 1A), Steinbach (2G), and Lutfi (2A) all had two points in the contest. Sophomore
Dylan McDermott posted four ground balls in the game for the Pride. Junior
Bobby Casey notched 15 saves for Hofstra. Vanginhoven had five points on three goals and two assists for Stony Brook, which also got two goals from Wayne White.
