MLAX: Tierney Shines As Hofstra Defeats Michigan

Hempstead, NY – Ryan Tierney had a monster game with four goals and four assists and Ryan Sheridan had his first career hat-trick to lead the Hofstra men's lacrosse team to a 12-9 win over Michigan on Saturday afternoon at James M. Shuart Stadium. Tierney's eight points tied his career-high, most recently against Drexel last April.

Hofstra moves to 2-0 on the year, while Michigan slips to 1-1.

Tierney wasted little time in getting the Pride on the board as he scored an unassisted goal 51 seconds into the contest. Following a Michigan goal, Tierney put the Pride up with his second unassisted goal at 3:34. Michigan would tie the game at two at 6:24 on Alex Buckanavage's goal. But Tierney responded once again, completing his hat trick at 7:38 with another unassisted goal on a low laser beam shot from the right side. However, Josh Zawad knotted the score once again with his second goal of the game at the 8:19 and that would be the last of the scoring for the quarter.

The Wolverines took their first lead of the game 51 seconds into the second quarter on Bryce Clay's goal, which started a three-goal rally as the visitors took a 6-3 advantage with 5:12 remaining on a Kevin Mack goal. Dylan McIntosh ended the run with an unassisted tally at the 6:55 mark to bring the Pride within two, 6-4. That started a Hofstra run that saw Whit Stopak notch his first of the season at 10:56 and Tierney score the equalizer with 40 seconds to go in the half. Tierney charged in from the right side and switched to his left hand at the last second and bounced a shot past Michigan keeper Matt Trowbridge.

Hofstra struck first in the third quarter as Riley Forte fed Ryan Sheridan at 3:00 to give the Pride the lead, 7-6. Bobby Casey kept the score that way with a solid save with Michigan up a man. The Wolverines would tie the score at seven at 11:51 as Jake Bonomi found Clay in front of the net for his third of the game. Tierney facilitated the next three Hofstra goals as the Pride took the lead. The senior attackman drew a triple team and passed off to Sheridan for the go ahead score. He then found a streaking Michael Altmann from the far sideline and the long stick middie put a shot past keeper John Kiracofe at 13:03 for a 9-7 Hofstra advantage.

Tierney continued his deft passing in the fourth and he threaded a pass to Stopak, who was coming from behind the crease for a 10-7 lead. Sheridan scored unassisted at 2:24 of the fourth before Tierney notched his fourth assist as he passed across the field to a charging and jumping McIntosh for a 12-7 advantage. Michigan would score the next two goals to make it a three-goal game, but the Pride would work the clock in the final minutes and hold on for the victory.

Hofstra returns to action next Saturday against Villanova at 2 p.m. Tickets are available by calling (516) HOF-TIXX or visiting HofstraTickets.com.
