Tareq Coburn led four Hofstra players in double-figures with 19 points as the Pride survived a second-half scare from Stony Brook in a 72-67 victory in the Long Island Rivalry Wednesday night at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. Hofstra held a 23-point lead with 14 minutes to play before the Seawolves rallied to make it a three-point game in the final minutes.
Hofstra moves to 2-2 on the season with the win. Stony Brook slipped to 1-3 with the loss.
Coburn had a great all-around game as he shot 7-11 from the floor including 5-9 from three-point range. He added eight rebounds, three assists and a steal. He was joined in double-figures by
Isaac Kante, who had 15 points and eight rebounds;
Caleb Burgess, who tallied a career-best 12 points and six assists; and
Jalen Ray, who had 10 points, five assists, and three steals.
Both teams started fast in the opening half, combing for 15 points in the first 2:03. Hofstra then went on a 12-0 run over a nearly four-minute stretch to turn an 8-7 deficit into a 19-8 lead with 14:41 on the clock. Kante and Green each had five points in the run, which gave Hofstra the lead for good. The Seawolves would snap their scoreless drought with 13:04 to go on a free throw and then added another pair from the charity stripe to cut the Pride's lead to eight, 19-11, with 11:53 remaining. Hofstra would outscore Stony Brook, 8-3, over the next several minutes to go up by 13, 27-14, following
Kvonn Cramer's layup with 8:54 on the clock. Cramer started the spurt with a free throw, while Coburn had a three-pointer and
Kevin Schutte added a layup off an offensive rebound. Hofstra's first half lead would grow to as many as 15 on two occasions, the last at 35-20 with 4:04 to go. The Pride would go into the locker room at the half with a 42-29 lead.
The Pride looked to be cruising towards a victory, as Hofstra would go up by as many as 23, 60-37, in the second half following a 7-0 run. Ray capped the run with a jumper with 14:02 remaining. The Seawolves mounted a comeback, though, midway through the half, using a 14-0 run to cut the Pride's lead to nine, 60-51, with 8:07 to play on a jumper from Jaden Sayles. Kante snapped the Hofstra scoreless drought with a jump hook that put the Pride back up by double-digits, 62-51, with 7:07 to go. However, Stony Brook would not go away and ran off eight more unanswered points to get within three, 62-59 with just over three minutes to play. Ray finally ended the Pride's scoreless drought at 4:26 with a jumper with 2:41 remaining. Ray hit another jumper with 1:26 to go that put Hofstra back up by five, 66-61. A pair of free throws from Stony Brook made it a one-possession game again with a minute to play, but
Vukasin Masic hit a big jumper to extend the lead to five once again, 68-63. Two more free throws by Stony Brook cut the Hofstra lead to three, but Burgess hit a pair from the line with 17.5 seconds to play and after a missed three-pointer by the Seawolves, Kante hit both ends of a one-and-one with 7.2 ticks on the clock for a 72-65 advantage and sealed the win.
Frankie Policelli paced the Seawolves with 16 points. Gueye and Tykei Greene each had 12 points, while Sayles added 10. Gueye grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds as well and added two blocked shots.
Hofstra returns to action Tuesday, December 15 at Monmouth. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
