BRONX, N.Y. – Despite having four players finish in double figures, the Hofstra University women's basketball team came up short on the road against Fordham University, 72-58 on Friday, Dec. 18 at Rose Hill Gymnasium.
Junior
JaKayla Brown led the scoring effort for the Pride with 17 points, while junior
Rosi Nicholson and redshirt-juniors
Jaala Henry and
Jaylen Hines reached the double-figure mark. Nicholson finished 2-for-3 from beyond the arc and junior
Jahsyni Knight had another solid performance with nine points, six assists, four rebounds and four steals.
The Pride defense made things difficult all night for the Rams, forcing at least 20 turnovers for the sixth-consecutive game to start the season. Six players tallied a steal on the evening, led by Knight's four swipes and an additional two by Hines and Nicholson.
A hot start from the floor saw Fordham jump out to a 15-8 lead at the first media timeout. The Rams knocked down six of its first seven attempts from the field, though the Pride hung tough during the early goings, trailing by just four points at the first break, 21-17. The Blue and Gold eventually posted a six-point burst to level the scoring at 21-21 after Henry laid in a bucket at the 8:30 mark of the second quarter. Another strong shooting stretch for Fordham put the Rams on a 10-2 run to close out the half, taking a 38-27 lead into the locker room.
Hofstra came out quick to begin the second half, using a layup from Hines and a triple from Nicholson to force a Fordham timeout just over a minute into the frame as the deficit was cut to six points. It was as close as the Pride would come the rest of the way, however, as Fordham extended the lead to 13 points at the end of the third quarter and held off Hofstra during the final 10 minutes of action.
Hofstra drops to 2-4 on the season with the loss, while Fordham improves to 2-1.
The Pride will play their final non-conference game of the 2020-21 season on Tuesday, Dec. 22 when it hosts Mount St. Mary's University inside the Davis S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex at 1:00 p.m.
