MTRK: Masai Sets Program Mark at Dr. Sander Invitational

1/25/2020 1:33:00 PM

NEW YORK, N.Y. – After a month and a half rest from competition, senior Alex Masai of the Hofstra men's track team competed in the Men's 3000m Invitational at the Dr. Sander Invitational at the Armory on Saturday afternoon and continued his incredible career with yet another personal and program-best mark.

Masai competed against several professional runners and compiled a time of 7:54.34, good for a ninth place finish overall and second place finish among collegiate runners. Masai's time bested three professional runners including Obsa Ali (ASICS), Eric Avila (adidas) and Alex Rogers (Reebok Boston TC).

Masai improved his previous top mark in the event by just over five seconds. Masai completed the 3000m run at the Boston University David Hemery Valentine Invitational last season with a time of 7:59.49. Masai has competed in the indoor event four times in his collegiate career, has improved his times in each of his performances, and has trimmed his time by 26 seconds since his first-ever 3000m race.

Ryan Adams from Furman was the top collegiate finisher in the race and recorded a time of 7:49.45.

The Hofstra men's track program will return to action on Friday, February 7 when the team will compete in the UAlbany Winter Classic. The meet will take place at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, NY.
