MBB: Hofstra Falls To William & Mary In CAA Play

Hempstead, NY - Eli Pemberton had 15 points to lead four Pride players in double-figures, but William & Mary led wire-to-wire in an 88-61 Colonial Athletic Association victory Thursday night at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.

Hofstra slipped to 11-5 overall and 2-1 in the CAA with the loss and saw its five-game winning streak snapped. William & Mary moved to 10-5 overall and 2-0 in league action with its second consecutive victory.

In addition to Pemberton, Hofstra received 11 points from Isaac Kante and Jalen Ray, and 10 from Desure Buie. Kante also added a team-high 10 rebounds while Buie and Pemberton each chipped in with three assists.

Hofstra spotted William & Mary a 7-0 lead before five straight points from Pemberton made it a 7-5 contest with 16:42 on the clock. But the Tribe responded with a 7-2 run to grab a 14-7 advantage with 14:58 to go after Andy Van Vliet's three-pointer. The William & Mary lead grew to 27-8 with 8:29 to go following a pair of Tyler Hamilton free throws. Ray's basket with 8:13 on the clock ended a near six-minute Hofstra scoring drought and cut the Pride's deficit to 17. But Van Vliet answered with a three-pointer to push the Tribe lead to 20, 30-10, with 7:52 to go. The lead would grow to 23, 39-16, and the Tribe would take a 22-point lead, 45-23, into the locker room at the break.

The second half saw William & Mary's lead grow to 29 points, 57-28, with 15:23 on the clock. Hofstra would cut the lead to 21 on several occasions. But the Tribe maintained their hot shooting and extended their advantage to a game-high 34, 82-48, with 5:17 to play on Van Vliet's three-pointer. Hofstra would not get closer than the final score the rest of the way.

Van Vliet had a game-high 18 points to lead William & Mary. Nathan Knight shot 7-7 from the field en route to a 15-point, 12-rebound game. Luke Loewe added 12 points on 6-7 shooting.
