STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Sophomore
Miri Taylor volleyed home a cross from junior
Lucy Shepherd during the 104th minute that lifted the Hofstra University Women's Soccer team to a 2-1 victory against Long Island rival Stony Brook University in double overtime on Sunday, Sept. 8 at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.
Taylor's game-winner was the first goal of the season for the midfielder. Following a turnover in the midfield, Shepherd delivered a perfect cross from the right wing and Taylor connected perfectly with a right-footed volley inside the left post to lift the Pride to the victory. Shepherd and Taylor helped the Pride find the back of the net for their first goal early in the contest, as a Taylor sent a cross through the box to Shepherd along the far end line, leading to a one-touch pass to junior
Lucy Porter in the middle of the penalty area. Porter, the reigning Colonial Athletic Association Offensive Player of the Week, buried a shot under the crossbar for her sixth goal of the season.
The Seawolves leveled the scoring during the 15th minute when Alyssa Francese took a pass in transition and blasted a curling shot from 28-yards out around freshman
Skylar Kuzmich. Despite several opportunities, Hofstra could not find the back of the net before the end of regulation and the two squads headed to extra time tied at 1-1.
Neither side tallied a shot attempt during the first overtime period and it took just one attempt by Taylor to lift the Pride to the victory with just over six minutes remaining in the second extra period.
Hofstra dominated the offensive attack, outshooting Stony Brook 17-5 overall and 8-2 in shots on goal. Junior
Sabrina Bryan led all players with seven shot attempts and four shots on goal. Kuzmich needed just one save to earn her third victory of the season.
The Pride return to the pitch on Thursday, Sept. 21 when they host Fairleigh Dickinson University for a non-conference match beginning at 7:00 p.m.
