HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Sophomore
Miri Taylor netted the game-winning goal just 63 seconds into the first overtime period to lead the Hofstra University women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory against Drexel University in the team's Colonial Athletic Association opener on Thursday, Sept. 26.
Junior
Lucy Shepherd carved a ball into the center of the penalty area that Taylor chested down and fired inside the left post for the game-winning goal during the extra period. The goal was the third of the year for Taylor and also her second extra time game-winner.
Despite a dominating effort as a whole by Hofstra, Drexel took an early advantage during the fifth minute when Melissa Lyon found the back of the net, giving the Dragons a 1-0 lead that carried into the halftime break.
Graduate student
Brianna Doran scored the first goal of her career on a beautiful left-footed volley on a corner kick taken by Taylor during the 58th minute of action to level the scoring for Hofstra. The Pride tallied 13 total shots during the period, but Dragon goalkeeper Libby Baeza made three of her nine saves during the second half to force the extra period.
Taylor led the Pride with eight total shot attempts, while junior
Sabrina Bryan added five shots, helping Hofstra to a 23-4 advantage in shots for the contest. The Pride also held a 9-0 edge in corner kicks.
