WSOC: Shepherd's Second Half Tally Lifts Hofstra to Third-Straight Win

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Junior Lucy Shepherd broke a scoreless tie during the 74th minute with her second goal of the season to lift the Hofstra University Women's Soccer team (5-3-0) past Columbia University (3-2-1) on Sunday, Sept. 15 at the Hofstra Soccer Stadium.

Hofstra held a 12-4 advantage in shot attempts, and a 5-1 edge in shots on goal for the match. Lions' goalkeeper Liz Matei made four saves before Shepherd ripped an off-balance shot through the legs of Matei for the contest's only tally. Sophomore Miri Taylor set up the play when her initial shot was blocked by a Columbia defender and junior Lucy Porter controlled the loose ball and found Shepherd at the penalty spot for the strike.

Columbia appeared to have leveled the scoring during the 87th minute off of a corner kick, but the Lions were called offside on the play and the goal was erased from the scoreboard. The Pride shut down Columbia the rest of the way to hang on for their third-consecutive victory.

Taylor tied for the team-lead with three shot attempts and led Hofstra with two shots on goal. Junior Bella Richards and Porter matched Taylor with three shots apiece, while freshman Skylar Kuzmich needed just one save during the 73rd minute to earn her second clean sheet of the season.

Hofstra will look to extend its winning streak when it closes out non-conference play against the University of Pennsylvania on Friday, Sept. 20 at Rhodes Field. Kickoff is slated for 6:00 p.m.

NOTES:
-Hofstra improves to 9-4-2 against Columbia and extends its unbeaten streak against the Lions to nine matches.
