WSOC: Hofstra Drops Decision to Brown Friday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Hofstra Women's Soccer Team dropped a non-conference decision by a score of 2-1 to the Brown University Bears at Stevenson-Pincince Field on Friday evening.

Brown got off to a quick offensive start, recording two corner kicks and two shots within the first 12 minutes of action. Senior defender Monique Iannella was at the right place at the right time, stopping a Brown attempt on the line to keep the match scoreless under 15 minutes in. Despite Brown's offensive pressure, it wasn't until the 45th minute until the Bears broke through, as Abby Carchio's free kick from just inches outside the top of the box made its way around the Hofstra wall and in. Freshman goalkeeper Skylar Kuzmich made another save 45 seconds later, coming off her line to keep it a one-goal match at halftime.

After the midway point, momentum shifted to the Pride, as Hofstra forced two-straight corner kicks in the 56th minute. The second of those corner kicks helped find the equalizer as junior forward Sabrina Bryan struck with her left foot nearly 30 yards out from the right side off a pass from senior defender Monique Iannella. The Pride posted four-straight shots without allowing any for the next seven minutes, but Brown scored the go-ahead goal in transition after sophomore midfielder Miri Taylor's shot was blocked on the opposite end. The match was very physical for the duration of the contest and Hofstra was held without a shot during the final 18 minutes of action.

Opportunities for each team were nearly even, with Brown recording 13 shots to Hofstra's 11. Hofstra had the edge on corner kicks, 3-2, and saves, 4-1. Bryan led the Pride with four shots, while Taylor recorded three.

With the loss, Hofstra drops to 1-2-0 overall while Brown improves to 1-0-0.

Hofstra will return to action for its home opener on Sunday, September 1. Kickoff at the Hofstra Soccer Stadium against the Fordham Rams is slated for 1 p.m.
