Hempstead, NY - Hofstra University Director of Athletics
Rick Cole Jr. today announced that a pair of long-time supporters of Hofstra Athletics and long-time employees of Hofstra University – Ken Tyler and Terry Ryan – would be the recipients of the Hofstra Athletics Pride Club Jack Lenz Memorial Lifetime Achievement Award and Joseph M. Margiotta Distinguished Service Award, respectively. The awards will be presented at the Hofstra Athletics Hall of Fame Induction and Golf Outing on June 17, 2019, at the Huntington Crescent Club.
The Jack Lenz Award is presented in recognition of exceptional and dedicated service for more than 20 years to the Hofstra Athletics Pride Club and Hofstra University Department of Athletics in support of athletics and academics. The Joseph M. Margiotta Award is given by the Hofstra University Department of Athletics in recognition of extraordinary dedication, generosity and service to the Hofstra Athletics Pride Club and Hofstra Athletics.
"We are very excited to recognize two very deserving individuals," said Cole. "Ken and Terry have dedicated a great deal of their lives to Hofstra University, Hofstra Athletics and the Hofstra Athletics Pride Club and their unwavering support is greatly appreciated. We look forward to honoring them June 17 for their outstanding service."
Tyler, a longtime Hofstra University employee and ardent supporter of Hofstra Athletics is the 2019 recipient of the Jack Lenz Award.
Tyler, who worked in the Hofstra Physical Plant Department for 38 years before retiring in 2016, has been a member of the Hofstra Athletics Pride Club since its inception in 1989. He has also been a men's basketball season ticket holder for 20 years and often travels to away games to support the Pride as well.
In his role as associate director of the physical plant, Tyler oversaw custodial services and maintenance of Hofstra facilities including Hofstra Athletics buildings, fields, and locker rooms. During his tenure, he also offered job opportunities to Pride student-athletes as part of the plant department's part-time student work force.
Tyler served in the United States Army from 1966 to 1968 and did a tour of duty in Vietnam before being discharged with the rank of sergeant. He then earned an associate degree from Nassau Community College in 1970 and a bachelor's degree in management from C.W. Post in 1972. Following a six-year career in the hospitality industry, Tyler started his career at Hofstra in 1978. In 2005 he was named Alumnus of the Year by the Hofstra Veteran's Alumni Association.
Ryan, who serves as director of Hofstra University Summer Camps where he coordinates the largest university summer camp program in the country, is the 2019 recipient of the Joseph M. Margiotta Award. He has been an avid supporter of Hofstra Athletics and the Pride Club for more than 20 years.
Ryan, who served on the men's basketball support staff under Coach Jay Wright as staff assistant for promotional activities, was an educator for 11 years in the Levittown and Valley Stream School Districts before taking over as director of summer camps in 1999.
He holds a degree in athletic administration from St. John's (1982), a master's in elementary education from St. John's (1990), and a professional diploma in educational administration from Dowling (1996).
