Hempstead, NY - Hofstra jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the fourth inning, but William & Mary scored 11 unanswered runs to post an 11-4 Colonial Athletic Association victory Saturday at University Field. The loss ended the season for the Pride, which needed a win to qualify for the CAA Championship next week.
Hofstra sees its season end at 18-31-1 overall and 10-14 in the CAA. The Pride had a strong finish to the season though, posting a 12-7-1 record over their final 20 games. William & Mary, which earned the No. 3 seed in the CAA Championship, moves to 31-21 overall and 12-12 in the CAA.
Hofstra broke through in the fourth as
Austin Gauthier led off with a single, went to second on
Kevin O'Connor's sacrifice bunt.
Anthony D'Onofrio then laced a grounder up the middle that William & Mary shortstop Kyle Wrighte fielded. But with no chance at first, Wrighte still made a throw that sailed into the Hofstra dugout to allow Gauthier to come in with the first run of the game. With runners on the corners,
Sean Rausch beat out a safety squeeze bunt for an RBI single to make it a 2-0 game.
Austin Pollack would add a sacrifice fly before
Vito Friscia capped the inning with an RBI double.
But William & Mary had a five-run answer in the top of the sixth to take control of the game. Wrighte started the inning off with a walk and moved to second on a one-out infield single by Owen Socher. Brandon Raquet followed with a triple to make it a 4-2 game. Zach Pearson then singled through the left side to knock in Raquet. Following a pitching change, Hunter Smith walked to put runners on first and second. Matthew Trehub then singled to center and an error on the play allowed Pearson to score. The Tribe would take the lead on an infield single from Matt McDermott that allowed Smith to score from third.
William & Mary would go on to add a run in the eighth and five more in the ninth to close out the scoring. McDermott had the big hit in the ninth, a two-run double that made it 10-4.
William & Mary relievers Nick Butts (3-0) and Chris Farrell shut the Pride offense down over the final 5 1/3 innings, allowing just three hits combined. Butts got the win after 1 2/3 of two-hit relief. Farrell allowed one hit over the final 3 2/3 innings to notch his fifth save of the season.
Hofstra starter
Ryan Rue gave up four runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings. Rue was perfect through four innings before giving up a single in the fifth.
Jimmy Joyce (2-4) took the loss for the Pride after allowing two runs on three hits in 1 2/3 innings.
Friscia had three hits and an RBI in his final game in a Hofstra uniform. Rausch had two hits, a run and an RBI for the Pride, which collected 10 hits on the day.
