BB: Hofstra Splits Doubleheader At Delaware; Picks Up Series Win

Newark, DE – Anthony D'Onofrio went 3-5 with a double, triple and home run in game one and Michael James notched his first win of the season as Hofstra posted a 7-4 victory over Delaware. The Blue Hens took the nightcap, 8-6, and avoided the series sweep.

Hofstra rallied from a 3-1 deficit with Austin Gauthier hitting a home run in the fourth to make it 3-2. The Pride then took advantage of a Delaware error, scoring two runs on the play to take the lead for good at 4-3. The Pride would add a run in the sixth to take a two-run lead and after the Blue Hens cut the lead to one (5-4), D'Onofrio homered in the eighth and Kevin O'Connor added an RBI single in the ninth to provide added insurance.

D'Onofrio missed the cycle by a single after tripling (and scoring on an error on the play) in the second, doubling in the sixth and homering in the eighth.

James (1-7) went five innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits. Jimmy Joyce went the final four innings and a run on one hit to earn his first save. Austin Pollack and Gauthier also had multi-hit games for the Pride with each collecting two hits.

Joey Silan (3-5) took the loss after allowing five runs (three earned) on five hits in 5 1/3 innings. Joseph Carpenter had two hits and a pair of RBIs for the Blue Hens.

In the second game, Delaware snapped a 3-3 tie with a four-run fifth inning and held off the Pride's comeback attempt to post the two-run victory. Jack Goan had a three-run home run and Zack Miller added a solo shot in the inning.

Rob Weissheier hit a solo home run in the sixth to make it a 7-4 game, but Carpenter answered with a single in the bottom of the inning to put the lead back up to four. Pollack had an RBI single in the seventh and Weissheier added a sacrifice fly to close out the scoring.

Gauthier had three hits in game two, while Pollack and Sean Rausch had two hits.

Seamus Brazill (1-1) took the loss in relief of Ryan Rue, allowing four runs on three hits in one inning of work. Chris Ludman (3-7) picked up the win for Delaware, allowing six runs (three earned) on 10 hits in 6 2/3 innings. CJ Schaible pitched two scoreless innings before Derek Wakeley came on to record the final out for his sixth save.

Hofstra moved to 17-29-1 overall and 9-12 in the CAA with the split. Delaware is 21-30 overall and is also 9-12 in league action. The series win gives Hofstra a valuable tiebreaker over Delaware with three games left in the regular season.

The Pride closes out the regular season Friday and Saturday when it hosts William & Mary.
