Elon, NC - Junior
Alyssa Parrella had six goals and one assist and the Hofstra Women's Lacrosse team outscored Elon 8-1 in the second half en route to a big 10-6 road win over the Phoenix on Sunday afternoon at Rudd Field. Parrella scored five of her goals in the second stanza as Hofstra overcame a 5-2 halftime deficit. In the process, she established a new school record for goals in a season with 63. The mark of 57 was set by Kathleen Mikowski in 2003 and tied by Parrella last year. Hofstra scored the final seven goals of the contest to earn the huge road victory.
Freshman
Jess Smith was incredible in net for the Pride as she made 12 saves, including six in each half, to fall one save shy of her season-high.
Parrella also now has 76 points this season to move into a tie for third all-time on the single season chart. Remarkably, she has three of the top four single season scoring totals in program history.
The win is Hofstra's third straight and improves the Pride's record to 9-4 overall and 2-0 in Colonial Athletic Association play. The nine wins are the most since the 2015 team won 11 games and the 2-0 start in conference action is the Pride's first since 2015. Elon falls to 3-9 and 1-1 in the CAA.
A free-position goal from Parrella put Hofstra ahead early on at the 26:42 mark before Elon scored four consecutive goals to lead 4-1 with 10:41 left in the first half following a goal from Gillian Curran. Junior
Mary Kate Gerety closed the gap to two with a goal off an assist from senior
Jenna Budd late in the half but the Phoenix was able to push the lead back to three with a goal with 71 seconds left before the intermission.
The two teams each scored goals over the first five minutes of the second half, with the Pride's coming off the stick of sophomore
Arianna Esposito. With Elon leading 6-3, Parrella put the team on her back and would score three straight goals to even the score at six with 22:45 remaining in regulation. Junior
Alexa Mattera would score what turned out to be the game-winner with 20:44 to play and then Hofstra would add two more goals from Parrella and then the final goal of the game from freshman
Amanda Guerra off an assist from sophomore
Katie Whelan.
Darcie Smith led Hofstra with four draw controls, while Mattera added three and Parrella posted a pair. Freshman
Alyssa DeAngelo notched a team-high three ground balls in the game with
Darcie Smith and freshman
Anna Kaufmann each tallying two caused turnovers.
Cami Lynch had three points on two goals and one assist for Elon. Curran finished with two points (1G, 1A), three ground balls and two draw controls for the Phoenix.
Hofstra returns to action next Sunday when it hosts James Madison at 12 p.m. The Pride and the Dukes are the only two undefeated teams remaining in CAA play.
