Brookline, MA -
Parker Quinn hit a three-run home run in the first inning,
Vito Friscia drove in a pair of runs, and
Jimmy Joyce threw 6 2/3 innings of shutout relief to lead Hofstra to a 7-1 Colonial Athletic Association victory over Northeastern Friday at Friedman Diamond.
The win was the Pride's first CAA victory of the season and moved their record to 5-19 overall and 1-3 in league action. The Huskies dropped below .500 on the year at 14-15 overall and lowered their CAA mark to 4-3.
Quinn gave the Pride an immediate lift in the first as he lifted his first career round-tripper to left field to give Hofstra a 3-0 lead. The Pride loaded the bases in the second and went up, 4-0, after Friscia was hit by a pitch.
The Huskies loaded the bases in the third with no outs off starter
Jack Jett. The junior righty struck out the Jake Farrell for the first out before walking in a run. That prompted a call to the bullpen and Joyce came on to induce a double play grounder that got Hofstra out of the inning.
Hofstra got a run in the fifth on an error and then in the sixth, after two walks and a wild pitch, Friscia hit a sacrifice fly to the fence in right that plated the sixth Hofstra run. The Pride capped the scoring in the eighth as
Daniel Page scored from second on an infield error.
Joyce (1-2) picked up his first career victory with a career-long outing. The sophomore allowed five hits and struck out a career-best six batters in a 97-pitch outing. Jett allowed two hits and a run in 2 1/3 innings and struck out four batters.
Tyler Brown (1-3) took the loss for the Huskies after allowing four runs on three hits in 1 2/3 innings. Scott Holzwasser had two of Northeastern's seven hits.
The teams continue the series with game two Saturday at 1 p.m.
