Ryan Tierney tallied two goals and goalie
Bobby Casey made 10 saves but Blue Hens junior Charlie Kitchen recorded four goals and five assists and goalie Ben DeLuca tied his career high with 18 saves as Delaware remained undefeated in Colonial Athletic Association play with a 13-7 victory over Hofstra at Delaware Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Delaware, which recorded their fourth consecutive victory, improved to 10-2 overall and 3-0 in the CAA. Hofstra falls to 4-8 overall and 1-2 in conference play with two CAA games remaining.
In addition to Tierney, five other Pride players scored goals as
Bryce Tolmie,
Dylan McIntosh,
Riley Forte,
Joey Elarde and
Jimmy Yanes tallied solo goals. Tolmie also posted an assist. Sophomore
Brian Herber won 20 of 23 face-offs in the contest.
In addition to Kitchen, Tye Kurtz scored four goals and Dean DiSimone added three goals and one assist. Clay Miller had a goal and an assist and Bryce Reid added two assists.
Hofstra, which never led in the game, watched as the Blue Hens scored twice in the first 7:34 of the contest as Tye Kurtz and Dean DiSimone dented the twine for a 2-0 lead. The Pride got on the board less than a minute later as Yanes tallied his seventh goal of the season to cut the deficit in half. Kurtz boosted the Delaware lead back to two at 3-1 with his 28th of the year with 1:46 to play in the first quarter. But Hofstra sophomore
Riley Forte notched his eighth of the season with 1:14 to play to close to within one at 3-2 after one quarter.
Delaware opened the second quarter with two goals in the first 2:34 as Charlie Kitchen and Clay Miller scored goals off assists from Bryce Reid to boost the lead to 5-2. Hofstra's
Ryan Tierney scored his 33rd of the season with 8:40 to play in the half before DiSimone notched his second of the game for the Blue Hens with 5:11 to play in the second. Pride freshman
Joey Elarde brought Hofstra back to within two at 6-4 with 2:49 to play with his third goal of the year.
The Blue Hens blew the game open in the third quarter with four goals to open the second half as Kurtz, Kitchen twice, and DiSimone tallied goals in the first 13 minutes to boost their lead to 10-4. Hofstra's
Bryce Tolmie ended the UD run with his third goal of the season with just 0:06 to play in the third to cut the deficit to 10-5. But Kitchen and Kyle Kvinski opened the fourth with goals in the first 3:16 to bump the lead to 12-5.
Tierney and McIntosh followed with Hofstra goals less than a minute apart to close to within five at 12-7 at the 6:13 mark. But that was all the Pride could get before Kurtz added a man-up goal with 3:49 to play to close out the scoring.
Hofstra will return to action next Saturday, April 20 when the Pride host the Dragons of Drexel in the final regular season home game at James M. Shuart Stadium. Game time for the Senior Day, CAA contest is 2 p.m.
Notes
- Saturday's game was the 44th in the series between Hofstra and Delaware. The Pride now lead the series, 30-14.
- Hofstra outshot Delaware, 39-32 and picked up 35 ground balls to the Blue Hens 31.
- Tierney, who extended his goals and points streak to 12 consecutive games, has a single season-high of 34 goals topping his previous best of 31 set in 2017. He also tallied his 23rd multi-goal contest in his 40 career games.
- Casey now has eight double-digit save games this season.
- Tierney now has 92 goals and 46 assists for 138 points in 40 career games at Hofstra as he is closing in on cracking the career Top 10 in both goals and points.
