Amanda Guerra posted her first career hat trick to lead the Hofstra Women's Lacrosse team to a wire-to-wire 13-8 victory over Columbia on Saturday evening at Robert. K. Kraft Field.
Hofstra improves to 7-4 with the win, while Columbia falls to 3-8 with the loss. The game was the final non-conference game of the season for the Pride.
The Pride jumped all over the Lions to start the contest as Hofstra scored the first four goals of the game and led 4-0 at the 25:02 mark following a goal from junior
Alexa Mattera. Whelan keyed the game-opening run with a pair of goals and the Pride's other goal came off the stick of Parrella. The Pride would push the lead to 6-1 as Parrella scored twice after Lindsey Ewertsen got Columbia on the board. Columbia gradually chipped away at the first half deficit and closed to within three, 7-4, after a goal from Alexandria Absey.
Hofstra took a three-goal lead into the break, but the lead would close to one as Columbia scored twice in the first seven minutes of the second stanza. With all the momentum on Columbia's side, Guerra stepped up and scored her first career goal with 22:08 left in regulation to give Hofstra back a two-goal advantage. The Lions tried to rally once again, making it a 9-8 game midway through the second half, but Whelan started a game-closing 4-0 scoring run that push the Pride to the road victory.
Hofstra, which had a 14-9 advantage in draw controls, got seven from junior
Darcie Smith and five from Mattera. Freshman
Anna Kaufmann tallied three ground balls, while Mattera added three as well. Mattera also led Hofstra with a trio of caused turnovers. Freshman
Jess Smith earned the win in net for the Pride with eight saves.
Absey had five points on three goals and two assists for Columbia, while Ewertsen had five points on two goals and three assists.
