Baltimore, MD - The Hofstra Men's Tennis team turned in a dominant pair of performances Tuesday with shutout wins at Coppin State and Loyola (MD). The Pride lost one set in the two matches.
Hofstra is 9-4 on the season. Coppin State is 0-6 while the Greyhounds are 2-4.
Hofstra opened the day with a 7-0 win over Coppin State.
Ryan Hardin and
Giacomo Pezzoli blanked Zaipo Oula and Quincy Pettis at No. 3 doubles to open the match and
Coco Haener and
Shawn Jackson clinched the point with a 6-2 victory at No. 1 over Jorge Rodriguez Rey and Sam Scala-McNeill.
Jan Leithner and
Marcus Smith wrapped up doubles play with a 6-2 win over Henrique Sada and Prabh Bal.
Leithner made it a 2-0 score in favor of the Pride as he cruised past Sada, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Smith defeated Rey, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 1 before Jackson clinched the match at No. 2 with a 6-0, 6-3 win over McNeill. The win was the 24th of the season for the freshman. Pezzoli added a 6-1, 6-1 win over Bal at No. 4. With the match decided, the fifth and sixth singles flights were shortened to one set each.
Julien Wolfe earned a 6-0 win at No. 5 over Oula while Hardin claimed a 6-2 victory over Pettis at No. 6.
Against Loyola Hofstra swept the Greyhounds in all nine matches. Jackson and Haener beat Skyler Gates and Matthew Fitzmaurice, 6-2, at No.1 doubles, and Smith and Leithner were 6-1 winners against Benny Glezer and C.J. Cash at No. 2. Hardin and Pezzoli teamed for a 6-1 triumph against Brian Hoffarth and Kyle Gower at No. 3.
In singles play, Smith was a 6-4, 2-1 (default, injury) winner against Gates. Jackson used scores of 6-0, 6-2 to beat Glezer at No. 2 while Haener topped Fitzmaurice, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 3. Leithner was a 6-2, 6-2 winner at No. 4 against Cash. Edik Pribitkin was the lone Loyola player to win a set, but Pezzoli came back from the opening frame setback to win, 3-6, 6-3, (10-4), at No. 5., and
Julien Wolfe beat Charlie Shanker, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 6 singles.
Hofstra is back in action Wednesday afternoon at Mount St. Mary's.
