WLAX: Mattera's Hat Trick Not Enough For Hofstra In Loss To No. 2 Maryland

Hempstead, NY - Alexa Mattera had three goals and goalkeeper Jess Smith made 11 saves for Hofstra, but No. 2 Maryland used an 8-0 run in the first half to break open a tie game en route to a 17-9 victory over the Pride Saturday afternoon at James M. Shuart Stadium.

Hofstra saw its four-game win streak snapped and slipped to 4-2 on the season. Maryland upped its record to 5-0.

The Terrapins jumped out to a 2-0 lead 3:26 into the game following unassisted goals from Erica Evans and Grace Griffin. Hofstra's Alyssa Parrella cut the deficit in half with an unassisted tally at the 4:48 mark. After Griffin put Maryland up by two, 3-1, with 24:51 on the clock, Parrella and Mattera scored back-to-back goals to knot the score at 3-3 with 21:44 to go. Mattera's goal was a short-handed one. The tie did not last long as Meghan Siverson scored a man-up goal with 21:18 to go, igniting the 8-0 run that culminated with Grace Griffin's third goal of the game, from Siverson, with 5:40 remaining.

Maryland then ran off three straight goals before the Pride answered with three of their own. Arianna Esposito's no look, over the shoulder tally capped the run and made it 15-9 with 8:23 remaining. That would be the Pride's final goal of the game.
