Baltimore, MD - The Hofstra Women's Tennis team began its spring break week trip with a 7-0 victory over Coppin State Tuesday afternoon at the Coppin State Tennis Courts. The Pride then rallied to defeat Loyola (MD), 4-3, at the McClure Tennis Center.
The Pride moved to 8-6 on the season with the win. Coppin State fell to 1-3 and Loyola suffered its first loss of the season to slip to 5-1.
In the first match of the day at Coppin State, the Pride claimed the doubles point as
Jasmine King and
Sarah Catherine Herndon defeated Brittania Cahua and Tinashe Gwaze, 6-1, at the No. 1 flight.
Katherine Kachkarov and
Alejandra Ruffini followed with a 6-1 victory at No. 2 over Precious Udofe and Shariah Dunwell to win the point before
Ronia Dolabany and
Odessa Stork finished things off with a 6-2 win at No. 3 over Ajla Hrnjic and Olivia Wallace.
Mandisa Walle opened singles with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Udofe at No. 4. Stork downed Dunwell at No. 3 by a pair of 6-2 scores to make it 3-0 in favor of the Pride. Herndon clinched the match at No. 2 with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Gwaze. King had a 6-4, 6-2 win over Cahua at No. 1 shortly after to make it 5-0. With the match decided, the No. 5 and No. 6 singles flights were cut to one set with Dolabany and
Ana Canahuate-Torres prevailing to complete the Hofstra shutout.
After losing the doubles point at Loyola, Hofstra won four of six singles matches to extend its win streak to three matches.
Loyola won at No. 1 and 3 doubles, taking an early 1-0 lead in the match. Kateri Martin paired with Abigail Thornton for a 6-2 win in the top slot over King and Herndon, while Abby Decker and Sandra Aguirre were 6-3 winners against Stork and Dolabany at No. 3. Hofstra did pick up a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles as Ruffini and Kachkarov beat Lin Robertson and Alexandria Agee.
Agee took a 6-1, 6-2 win over Walle at No. 6 singles, and Aguirre was a 6-3, 6-7 (5), (10-7) victor against Stork at No. 5, but the Pride won the one through four singles matches. Ruffini edged Martin, 7-5, 7-6 (5) at No. 1, and King came back to knock off Thornton, 2-6, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 2. Kachkarov then beat Decker, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, at No. 3 singles, and Herndon was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Robertson.
Hofstra will be in action at Mount St. Mary's on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
