New Haven, CT - Hofstra won the final two singles flights to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 4-3 victory over Sacred Heart Friday night at Yale University.
Jan Leithner tied the match at the No. 4 flight and
Giacomo Pezzoli won it at No. 6.
Hofstra moved to 7-3 on the season while the Pioneers dropped to 4-9.
Hofstra claimed the doubles point as
Coco Haener and
Shawn Jackson downed William Wibmer and Kevin Chao, 6-4, at No. 1. The Pioneers won at No. 2 before Pezzoli and
Ryan Hardin clinched the point with a 7-5 win over Lucca Casalduc and Francisco Del Valle at No. 3.
The Pioneers won the first two completed singles flights, No. 1 and No. 3, to take a 2-1 lead. But Jackson defeated Wibmer in three sets (6-1, 3-6, 6-3) to tie the score. Chris Sause gave Sacred Heart the 3-2 lead with a win at No. 5, setting up the Hofstra comeback. Leithner downed Casalduc in three sets (6-4, 6-7, 7-5) to knot the match at 3. Pezzoli then had to rally against Bryan Einstoss at No. 6. The Hofstra freshman dropped the first set, 6-4, before taking the next two sets by 6-4 scores.
The Pride returns to action Sunday at the United States Naval Academy.
