MLAX: Big Second Half Propels Hofstra Over St. John's

Hempstead, NY – Pride juniors Ryan Kinnard and Ryan Tierney each tallied three goals and sophomore goalie Bobby Casey made 15 saves to lead Hofstra to a 9-7 victory over the Red Storm of St. John's at James M. Shuart Stadium Tuesday night.

Hofstra improved to 3-4 on the season and snapped a four-game losing skid. The Red Storm dropped their third consecutive game to fall to 2-4 on the season.

Tierney, who also tallied two assists for the Pride, posted his fourth hat-trick of the season and extended his consecutive points and goals streak to seven contests. Kinnard recorded his first career hat-trick. Senior Jimmy Yanes, sophomore Riley Forte and freshman Nick Williams tallied the other Pride goals. Sophomore Brian Herber won 14 of 18 face-offs for Hofstra and picked up a game-high 10 ground balls. Casey recorded double-digit saves for the fourth time this season.

St. John's was led by Mike Madsen with one goal and two assists while Joe Madsen and Colin Duffy each added two goals. Chris Buscemi and Declan Swartwood each had a goal and an assist. Brody Agres made 12 saves in the Red Storm goal.

In a game that featured five tied scores and three lead changes, the two teams battled evenly for the first two quarters. The first quarter ended tied at 1-1 on goals by the Red Storm's Mike Madsen and Hofstra's Kinnard. Williams tallied his second of the year to open the scoring in the second quarter before St. John's tallied three of the next four to open up a 4-3 lead. But Tierney scored his second of the period with 0:57 to play in the half to knot the game at 4-4 at halftime.

The Red Storm's Joe Madsen tallied the first two goals of the second half to give St. John's a 6-4 lead with 9:22 to play in the third. But Hofstra responded with five unanswered goals, including two by Kinnard, to take a 9-6 lead just 1:57 into the fourth quarter. Swartwood would tally his 11th of the season midway through the fourth but Casey made five of his 13 saves in the fourth quarter to preserve the victory.
