Alexa Mattera had a career-high six goals and six draw controls and junior
Darcie Smith posted an incredible 11 draw controls and two goals to lead the Hofstra Women's Lacrosse to a dominating 20-11 victory over Fairfield on Saturday afternoon at Rafferty Stadium. The 20 goals are the most for Hofstra since March 25, 2017, when the Pride defeated Central Connecticut State, 21-3.
The 11 draw controls were the most for a Pride player since Brittain Altomare had 12 against Quinnipiac on March 8, 2015.
Hofstra improves to 3-1 with its third straight win, while Fairfield suffers its first loss of the season and drops to 3-1. Junior
Alyssa Parrella posted six points on five goals and one assist to help the Pride to the victory.
It was a back and forth first half with Mattera opening the scoring with an unassisted tally at the 28:36 mark. The teams would alternate goals over the first 12 minutes until Fairfield notched two straight, from Jillian Winwood and Taylor Mitchell, to take their first lead of the game at 5-4. Alyssa Parrella and Mattera scored in the final 7:22 of the opening stanza to send the Pride into the break with a 7-6 advantage.
Hofstra came out of halftime on fire as the Pride scored the first eight goals of the second half to take a 15-6 lead with 19:46 left in regulation. In total the run was 10-0 spanning the two halves with Mattera starting second half run off an assist from sophomore
Katie Whelan at the 28:26 mark. Parrella scored twice during the run and had an assist, while freshman
Erin Demek had a pair of goals as well during the game-changing second half run. Fairfield was only able to get the game back to within eight on a trio of occasions before Hofstra took its largest lead of the game at 20-9 on an unassisted goal from Whelan with 7:50 remaining.
Whelan finished with three goals and one assist, while sophomore
Shannon Boyle posted two assists, three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Freshman
Anna Kaufmann added three draw controls and two ground balls for the Pride, while freshman
Jess Smith earned the win in net with seven saves.
Brooke Gallagher had two goals and six assists for Fairfield, which got three goals from Winwood. Erin Mammele added four draw controls and two ground balls.
Hofstra is back in action on Tuesday when it hosts Quinnipiac at 3 p.m.
