SB: Hofstra Falls to South Alabama

MOBILE, Ala. – The Hofstra University Softball team dropped a non-conference game to the host of the 2019 Mardi Gras Invitational, the South Alabama Jaguars by a score of 8-0 at Jaguar Field on Saturday afternoon.

Hofstra falls to 1-6 on the season while South Alabama improves to 6-6 overall.

As a team, Hofstra compiled five total hits, as five Pride players went 1-for-3 at the plate including senior Lydia Witkowski, freshman Kasey Collins, junior Kristin Hallam, freshman Meghan Giordano and senior Courtney Scarpato.

After each team went scoreless through the first two innings, Hofstra's offense began rolling the second time around as Witkowski, the lead-off hitter, beat out an infield single to shortstop. One batter later, Collins reached on a fielding error and Giordano singled to center field to load the bases with one out, however a strike out and ground out left three runners on base for the Pride.

South Alabama got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third, as the Jaguars scored four runs on four hits to gain a four-run advantage. After Hofstra was retired in order, the home team added four additional runs to extend the lead to eight.

Hofstra strung together back-to-back singles with one out in the fifth inning, but was not able to score as the contest ended in the fifth.

Hofstra will close out the Mardi Gras Invitational against Stephen F. Austin tomorrow, February 24, at Jaguar Field. First pitch against the Ladyjacks is set for 12:15/11:15 CST. For fans who are unable to attend, live stats will be available.
