MOBILE, Ala. – The Hofstra Softball team recovered from a three-run deficit midway through, but eventually fell to the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks, 7-3, to close out the 2019 Mardi Gras Invitational at Jaguar Field on Sunday afternoon.
On the season, Hofstra falls to 1-7 overall while SFA improves to 11-5.
Hofstra got hits from four players, led by freshman
Kasey Collins and junior
Kristin Hallam who each had two base hits. Hallam was 2-for-3 at the plate with a walk and also scored one run for the Pride. Freshman
Meghan Giordano and freshman
Madison McKevitt both had one hit, while McKevitt drove in the only RBI on the day. In addition, senior
Courtney Scarpato drew two walks and scored one run.
Freshman
Mackenzie Suto got the start in the circle and pitched 4.0 innings with two strikeouts and was later relieved by freshman
Madison Burns who tossed two innings, also with two strikeouts.
The Pride went hitless through the first three innings while SFA scored a trio of runs to lead, 3-0 heading into the top of the fourth. Hofstra went on to produce all of its scoring in the fourth as Hallam got a rally started with a single to left center field to lead off the frame. Giordano followed up with a single through the left side, and Scarpato loaded the bases with a walk. A McKevitt sacrifice fly would then send Hallam home as Hofstra cut the deficit to two runs. The Pride added two more tallies when freshman
Lyndsey Shaw reached on a fielding error by the Ladyjack's left fielder, allowing Scarpato and Giordano to level the score at three.
SFA took control in the bottom of the fifth inning, as the Ladyjacks added four runs on three hits to pull away late. Hofstra strung together back-to-back two-out singles by Collins and Hallam in the top of the seventh, but the rally was ended with a ground out, leaving two runners on base.
Hofstra will head home for the week but will head back down south to Georgia for the I-75 Challenge where the Pride will play doubleheaders against Kennesaw State (March 1) and Georgia Tech (March 2). The trip will conclude with a single game against Georgia State on March 3.
