Bethpage, NY - The Hofstra University Women's Tennis team picked up its first win of the spring season in a 5-2 victory over defending MEAC Champion Morgan State late Saturday night at Sportime in Bethpage.
Hofstra moved to 2-1 on the season overall while the Bears, who played in the NCAA Tournament last season, slipped to 1-6.
The Pride won the doubles point as
Ronia Dolabany and
Odessa Stork combined for a 6-2 victory over Dana Santiago and Oriane Yehouenou at No. 3, and
Alejandra Ruffini and
Katherine Kachkarov picked up a 7-5 win over Peggy Rooke and Asmara Rose for their seventh win of the season.
After Morgan State tied the match at one with a victory by Rose at No. 3 singles, the Pride reeled off two consecutive flight wins to take a 3-2 advantage. Kachkarov downed Santiago at No. 2, 6-2, 6-2 and Ruffini earned a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Rooke at No. 1. The Bears would pull within one, 3-2, after a win at No. 6 but
Sarah Catherine Herndon clinched the team win with a 6-4, 7-5 victory at No. 4 over Averiana Mitchell.
Odessa Stork closed out the night with a 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 win over Oriane Yehouenou at No. 5.
The Pride is back in action Saturday, Feb. 16, when they host Marist at Sportime. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
