St. Bonaventure, NY - Senior
Desure Buie had 17 points to lead the Pride, but it wasn't enough as the Hofstra men's basketball team was defeated by St. Bonaventure, 73-45, on Saturday afternoon at the Reilly Center.
The loss drops Hofstra's record to 6-4 on the season and ends their modest two-game win streak. St. Bonaventure won its fourth straight game in improving to 5-4 this season.
Hofstra jumped out to an 8-2 advantage just over four minutes in and would hold an 11-4 lead after a Buie three-pointer with 14:53 left before intermission. A free throw from sophomore
Isaac Kante kept the lead at 12-8 for the Pride with 13:33 on the clock, but at that point, the Bonnies scored 20 straight points to take command with a 28-12 lead following a basket from Bobby Planutis with 8:23 remaining in the opening stanza. Hofstra would close the gap to 12 at one point over the final eight minutes before St. Bonaventure took a 14-point lead into the break.
Buie got the Pride on the board to open the second half with a jumper at the 19:45 mark but the Bonnies used a 15-1 run to open up a commanding 55-29 lead midway through the second half.
Kante had eight rebounds and six points for the Pride, while senior
Eli Pemberton added nine points and four rebounds. Jaren English had 17 points for St. Bonaventure, which also got 17 points and six rebounds from Dominick Welch.
Hofstra finally returns home to the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex on Tuesday when it hosts Stony Brook in "The Long Island Rivalry, presented by The Greene Turtle". NOTES
- Hofstra is now 1-5 all-time against St. Bonaventure. The Pride won the most recent meeting at St. Bonaventure, 89-83, during the 2015-16 season and the Bonnies returned the favor with an 81-75 victory in Hempstead in 2016-17.
- Buie saw his consecutive free throws made streak come to an end at 35. It is the longest streak in the
Joe Mihalich era at Hofstra and tied for the seventh-longest in Colonial Athletic Association history.
