Desure Buie had 21 points and five assists and the Hofstra men's basketball team led wire-to-wire in picking up a dominating 91-69 victory over Holy Cross at the Boca Raton Beach Classic at FAU Arena at Florida Atlantic.
The win improved Hofstra's record to 5-3 this season, while Holy Cross falls to 0-7 with the loss.
Sophomore
Isaac Kante scored the Pride's opening bucket in the game and Hofstra would lead for the entire opening 20 points, stretching the lead to as many 14 on several occasions. Leading 8-7 after nearly four minutes of action, Hofstra pushed the advantage to seven, 16-9, with a three-pointer from senior
Eli Pemberton at the 13:27 mark. Nine straight points by the Pride later in the half would make it 27-13 with 8:34 left before intermission as junior
Tareq Coburn scored five during the run. The lead would hover around double digits the remainder of the half and the Pride got an offensive rebound put-back basket from Kante at the first half buzzer to make it 40-26.
Hofstra came out of the locker room with all the momentum as the Pride scored 11 of the first 15 points in the second stanza to open up a commanding 20-point lead, 51-31, with just under 17 minutes left in regulation. Buie had five points during the half-opening run to fuel the Pride. A three-pointer from junior
Jalen Ray with 13:38 remaining would push the lead to 26, 64-38, marking the biggest margin up to that point. The Pride dominated from start to finish in picking up their fourth win in their last five games.
Pemberton and Ray each added 16 for Hofstra, which got 12 points and eight rebounds from Kante and 12 points from Coburn. Joe Pridgen and Marion Hargis each had 16 points for Holy Cross, with Pridgen adding seven rebounds.
Hofstra is next in action on Monday at 2 p.m. when it faces Canisius in the championship game of the Naismith bracket of the Boca Raton Beach Classic.
NOTES
- Hofstra is 3-5 all-time against Holy Cross. The Pride won the last meeting before today, 71-56, in 2010-11.
- Pemberton reached double figures for the 80th time in his career, while Buie did it for the 35th time, Ray for the 28th and Coburn for the 22nd time.
- All five of the Pride's wins this season have been by double digits.
