HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The top-seeded Hofstra University Women's Soccer team (15-3-2) dominated from wire to wire to capture its third-straight Colonial Athletic Association Championship with a 5-1 victory over the sixth-seeded James Madison Dukes on Saturday, November 9 at the Hofstra Soccer Stadium.
Following the match, four Hofstra players were named to the CAA Women's Soccer Championship All-Tournament Team, including junior forward
Sabrina Bryan, junior midfielder
Jordan Littleboy, junior midfielder
Bella Richards, and the most outstanding player was junior midfielder,
Lucy Porter.
Hofstra had four goal-scorers on the day, including Porter, sophomore
Megan Fisher, Bryan and junior
Lucy Shepherd.
It took just three minutes for Hofstra to find the scoreboard, as Porter flicked in a cross by freshman
Anja Suttner at the 3:38 mark to take a 1-0 advantage over the Dukes. The Pride extended the advantage to two when Bryan curled in a corner kick from the far corner, catching the head of Fisher who converted on her second goal of the season.
Despite the cold temperatures, Hofstra stayed hot out of the locker room as Bryan bent in a beautiful shot to the top-right corner of the mesh from just outside the box to make the score 3-0 in favor of the Pride 2:13 into the second half. The scoring parade continued almost exactly 10 minutes later when Shepherd sent home a rocket with her left foot just outside the six-yard box off a pass by Porter from the right side.
JMU's lone goal came in the 69th minute of play, as Iris Rabot converted in a penalty kick after a Hofstra handball inside the box. Hofstra put an exclamation point on the victory during the final two minutes when Porter tapped in her conference-best 16th goal of the season with the help of Fisher who recorded her first assist of the season.
With the championship victory, Hofstra earned the CAA Automatic Qualifier to the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship. Hofstra will find out its destination on Monday, Nov. 11, at 4:30 p.m. ET on the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship Selection Show.
