HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Junior forward
Sabrina Bryan used her lethal left foot to send a shot off the post and into the back of the net to advance the Hofstra Women's Soccer team to the second round of the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship with a 1-0 golden goal victory over the Loyola Chicago Ramblers on Saturday afternoon at the Hofstra Soccer Stadium.
It took just 3:22 into the first overtime period for Bryan to find the back of the net, when she received a pass from junior
Bella Richards and sophomore
Miri Taylor to break a 93-minute scoreless draw. After a combined 25 attempts between both teams during regulation, Hofstra secured the win with the contest's first shot in extra time.
It was a game filled with several momentum swings, however the final shot tally ended in favor of Hofstra, 15-11. Hofstra applied pressure early on as the Pride racked up four chances within the first 20 minutes with Rambler keeper Grace Droessler making three saves during the span. With 13 minutes to go in the first stanza, Loyola had the chance for a breakaway, but a strong defensive play by sophomore
Lily Stavisky and a save by freshman goalkeeper
Skylar Kuzmich halted the Loyola Chicago offense.
Hofstra continued to press right out of the locker room, as the Pride compiled three corner kicks within the first six minutes and sophomore
Miri Taylor chipped a perfectly placed ball from outside the left edge of the box, however that opportunity was stopped with a one-handed diving save by Drossler before bouncing off the crossbar twice.
Toward the end of the second half, the Ramblers picked up the pace with four-straight opportunities within the 60- and 70-minute marks. Hofstra had four more opportunities by the end of regulation while Kuzmich added another save in the 81st minute to add to her total of four on the day, but the Hofstra offense took care of business in the 94th minute to secure "win or go home" victory.
Hofstra will now travel across the nation to Stanford and will meet the No. 1 ranked and top-seeded Cardinal on Friday, November 22. Match time is set for 10 p.m. EST / 7 p.m. PST.
