MSOC: Late Goal Sends Hofstra Through To CAA Semifinals

Harrisonburg, VA - Matthew Vowinkel scored the game-winning goal with just under five minutes to play to send Hofstra to the semifinals of the 2019 Colonial Athletic Association Championship with a 2-1 victory over Delaware Friday afternoon at Sentara Park. The third-seeded Pride advance to face second-seeded James Madison Sunday at 3 p.m.

Hofstra improved to 10-6-2 on the season with the win. It is the second 10-win season in a row for the Pride. Delaware, which was the sixth seed, sees its season end at 3-9-3.

Delaware opened the scoring 6:11 into the game as Marco De la Bandera headed in a pass from Jacob Rubini. Alvin Halley also was credited with an assist on the play. The Pride evened the score at 10:29 as Frederik Rieper scored his fifth of the season. Oscar Ramsay started the play by sending a pass to George O'Malley at the far post. The Pride's junior co-captain one-touched a pass back across to a charging Rieper, who tapped a shot past Renan Thomazo for the equalizer.

The second half saw back and forth action, but neither team had many scoring opportunities. Hofstra had one shot on goal through the first 40 minutes while Delaware had none. But at 85:24, Hendrik Hebbeker played a through ball to Vowinkel and the junior striker slid a shot past Thomazo.

Delaware outshot the Pride, 11-9, on the day but put just three shots on goal. Seven of the Pride's nine shots were on target as Thomazo had five saves. Alex Ashton made two saves for the Pride.
