MSOC: Hofstra Blanks Northeastern, Clinches No. 3 Seed In CAA Championship

Hempstead, NY - After not having a player score a hat tick in 14 years, Hofstra junior Matthew Vowinkel has two in his last three games as he scored all three goals for the Pride in a 3-0 victory over Northeastern Saturday night at Hofstra Soccer Stadium. The win clinched the No. 3 seed in next week's Colonial Athletic Association Championship for the Pride.

Hofstra moved to 8-6-2 overall and 5-2-1 in the CAA with the win. Northeastern, which will be the No. 5 seed, fell to 6-8-3 overall and 3-3-2 in league action.

Vowinkel opened the scoring at 25:42 with a header off a brilliant feed from Storm Strongin. Vowinkel headed in another long cross, this one from Jason Ramirez, at 78:36, to increase the Pride's lead to 2-0. He then closed out the scoring by tapping in a rebound off a shot from Shane Salmon at 82:36.

The Pride defense clamped down on the Huskies, limiting them to just eight shots on the night with just three on goal. Alex Ashton stopped all three shots for his 19th career shutout, which ties him for third place on the all-time Hofstra list with Patric Pray.

Northeastern keeper Cree Chandler had five saves in a losing effort.
