BOSTON, Mass. – The Hofstra University women's soccer team out-shot Northeastern, 29-14, but settled for a 2-2 draw against the Huskies in a Colonial Athletic Association match at Parsons Field on Thursday evening.
Hofstra (8-3-1, 2-0-1 CAA) fell behind Northeastern (4-7-1, 1-1-1 CAA) early, as the Huskies scored two goals on back-to-back shots in the first 10 minutes of action. The Pride racked up three corner kicks and two shots by the 24th minute and finally connected when junior
Lucy Shepherd deflected in a pass by classmate
Sabrina Bryan to cut the deficit in half. It appeared that the Pride scored again four minutes later, however an offside call against Hofstra negated the goal and Northeastern maintained a one-goal lead. By the end of the first half, Hofstra added three more shots on goal but trailed at the midway point, 2-1.
Hofstra tallied the first five opportunities of the second half and added four more by the 70th minute before freshman
Anja Suttner headed in a corner kick by junior
Miri Taylor, overcoming the two-goal deficit. The opportunities continued for the Pride throughout the rest of the stanza highlighted by a header shot by junior
Lucy Porter that hit the crossbar with 10 seconds remaining in regulation, sending the match into extra time.
The Pride had all of the momentum in the first overtime, recording four total opportunities with two shots on goal by Porter and junior
Bella Richards. After 100 minutes, the match was sent to double overtime where Northeastern nearly claimed the game-winner with a shot that hit the post in the 110th minute, however the Pride and Huskies could not find the back of the net and the two squads settled for the 2-2 draw.
Hofstra will turn around quickly and travel to the College of Charleston for a CAA match against the Cougars on Sunday, October 6.
