WSOC: Hofstra Captures CAA Regular Season Championship, Concludes Unbeaten Conference Slate

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Hofstra University Women's Soccer team clinched the No. 1 overall seed in the 2019 Colonial Athletic Association Championship, taking down the William & Mary Tribe by a 2-1 score at Martin Family Stadium on Saturday.

Hofstra, now 12-3-2 overall, capped off an undefeated 7-0-2 CAA mark while the Tribe dropped to 5-11 overall and 3-5-1 in the conference.

The Pride opened up scoring in the 21st minute when junior Lucy Porter intercepted a pass near midfield and found classmate Sabrina Bryan who sprinted up the middle, crossed over a defender, and used her non-dominant foot to hit the back of the mesh for the seventh time this season. The Tribe managed to knot the score in the 39th minute taking advantage of a Hofstra own goal, as the 1-1 score carried into halftime.

Four minutes into the second stanza, Hofstra gained its second advantage of the day when sophomore Miri Taylor crossed up a Tribe player and left-footed her fifth goal in the last six contests right at the top of the 18-yard box with the assist credit going to Porter. Shortly after, the Tribe had a one-on-one opportunity and freshman goalkeeper Skylar Kuzmich altered the shooter enough to force the shot inches right of the post.

Each team placed just one shot on goal for the remainder of the contest, although Hofstra fought off several offensive opportunities by the Tribe in the final 13 minutes of action.

As the No. 1 overall seed, Hofstra received a quarterfinal round bye and will automatically move on to the CAA semifinals. The Pride will host the winner of the No. 4 seeded Northeastern Huskies and No. 5 seeded Elon Phoenix on Sunday, November 3. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

NOTES:
-Hofstra captured the No. 1 seed and CAA regular season championship for the second time in the last three seasons and fourth time overall during head coach Simon Riddiough's tenure.
