WSOC: Hofstra Uses Five Second Half Goals to Defeat Towson

TOWSON, Md. – The Hofstra University Women's Soccer team scored five second half goals in an approximate 29-minute span as the Pride defeated Towson, 5-1 in a Colonial Athletic Association contest on Thursday afternoon at the Tiger Soccer Park.

Hofstra improved to 12-3-2 and 6-0-2 in the CAA while extending its unbeaten streak to a nation-leading 12 matches while Towson dropped to 3-13-1 overall and 0-8-0 in the league.

The Pride had several first half opportunities including a shot that hit the crossbar by freshman Brianna Passaro, but Hofstra was unable to capitalize on any attempt as the match was tied, 0-0 at the half despite the Pride holding an 8-0 edge on shots.

Things still weren't going Hofstra's way minutes into the second half when junior Miri Taylor had two shots roll a ball-width wide of each side of the post, but the third time was a charm for Taylor when she booted a shot to the back right corner of the net, assisted by Sabrina Bryan.

Junior Lucy Porter made it a two-goal game when she put home a chested ball by junior Lucy Shepherd in front of the left side of the net in the 60th minute, before adding her conference-best 14th goal of the season on a penalty kick nearly three minutes later, triggered by a hand ball in the box by the Tigers. The scoring parade continued when Bryan, who recorded her second assist of the match, sent a ball to sophomore Alia Mentzell who tapped the ball in for her first career goal and Hofstra's fourth of the match.

Towson managed one goal in the 79th minute, but the Pride recovered the deficit again when Mentzell turned and fired for a beautiful top-shelf goal off a pass by sophomore Sam Diamond to finalize the score, 5-1.

Hofstra will close out the regular season on Sunday, October 27 at William & Mary. Kickoff at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field is set for 1 p.m.
