Box Score Newark, NJ - The Hofstra University Men's Tennis team opened up the spring portion of their 2018-19 schedule at the NJIT Winter Invitational Saturday. The Pride won seven matches through two rounds of play.
Freshman
Julien Wolfe made his season debut and posted a 2-0 record. Wolfe defeated Wagner's Dale Sandy in the first round at fifth singles in a thrilling three-set match. The Los Angeles, California, native won the first set, 6-2, before dropping the second set, 4-6. But Wolfe prevailed in the third set, 10-8, for his first career victory. In round two, playing at the No. 4 spot, Wolfe picked up a 6-4, 6-1 win over Wagner's Eric Poland.
Fellow freshman
Giacomo Pezzoli also went 2-0 on the day as he downed NJIT's George Svensson in round one at No. 6, 6-3, 6-3, and Juan David Bejarano (NJIT), 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5 in round two.
Shawn Jackson, also a freshman, picked up one win Saturday as he defeated Alex Pedrazzini of Bucknell, 6-1, 7-5, at No. 3 in the second round. Â Seniors
Marcus Smith and
Jan Leithner also picked up singles wins. Smith defeated Anatolyi Lashkuhl of Wagner, 6-2, 1-6, 10-8 at No. 1 in the second round while Leithner earned a 6-3, 6-3 win over Lucas Gonzalez.
The NJIT Winter Invitational concludes Sunday with play beginning at 9 a.m.
