Towson, MD - Senior
Justin Wright-Foreman (25) and junior
Eli Pemberton (22) combined for 47 points and senior
Desure Buie was spectacular with 14 points, seven assists, six rebounds and six steals as the Hofstra Men's Basketball team won its 16th straight game, 84-61, over Towson Saturday afternoon at SECU Arena. The streak is the longest active win streak in the nation.
Hofstra improved to 19-3 overall and 9-0 in Colonial Athletic Association play. Towson falls to 7-15 and 3-6 in conference action.
The win streak is the second-longest in the program's NCAA Division I history (since 1966-67) and the third longest overall in school history. It is the longest since an 18-game streak in 2000-01. The record through 22 games is the best for the program since the 1961-62 squad also began the year with a 19-3 record.
Hofstra also owns the longest current road win streak at seven games and the 16 straight wins is tied for the second-longest by a CAA school in the history of the league. George Mason had a 16-game streak in 2010-11 and Navy had a 16-game streak in 1985-86. Drexel owns the CAA record with a 19-game win streak in 2011-12.
It was all Hofstra to start the contest as the Pride scored 13 of the first 16 points in the contest to lead 13-3 just over five minutes into the game after 11 straight from Hofstra, including five from Wright-Foreman during the run. Hofstra pushed the lead to 16 later in the half as they scored seven straight points that culminated with a three-pointer from Wright-Foreman with 9:24 showing on the clock that put the Pride ahead 25-9. Towson would close the gap to seven late in the half on a pair of free throws from Tobias Howard before the Pride scored the final five points of the stanza to take the 12-point lead into the break. It was all Wright-Foreman in the first half as he scored 18 points to lead all scorers.
Hofstra pushed the lead to 18 points, 59-41, just over five minutes into the second stanza as the Pride got a three-pointer from Pemberton and a basket from junior
Tareq Coburn to take the commanding lead. Towson got a jumper from Brian Fobbs to close the gap to 11, 66-55, with a little less than seven minutes left in regulation before Hofstra pushed the lead up to 20 with nine straight points, including seven from Buie. The Pride would cruise from there as they pushed the win streak to 16.
The Pride placed a total of five players in double figures as Coburn (11) and graduate student
Jacquil Taylor (10) joined the aforementioned Wright-Foreman, Pemberton and Buie. Buie and Pemberton tied for the team-high in rebounds (6), with Buie posting game-highs in assists, rebounds and steals. Fobbs led Towson with 20 points and six rebounds, while Howard added 14 points.
The steals and rebounds totals for Buie marked new career-highs. It is the most steals for a Hofstra player since Stevie Mejia had seven against Towson on February 16, 2013.
Hofstra is back in action on Saturday, February 2 when it travels to Northeastern for a 4:30 p.m. contest.
