Williamsburg, VA - Senior
Justin Wright-Foreman scored 37 points and sophomore
Jalen Ray added 19 points, including a huge three-pointer, as the Hofstra Men's Basketball team outlasted William & Mary, 93-90, in triple overtime, to earn its 11th consecutive victory. The win streak is the third-longest active win streak in the nation behind Michigan (16) and Virginia (14).
The win improves Hofstra's record to 14-3 overall and a perfect 4-0 in Colonial Athletic Association play. The 4-0 start is the Pride's best in conference play since the 2010-11 squad began the conference slate with four straight wins. The 14-3 mark is the program's best-ever start through 17 games at the NCAA Division I level (since 1966-67).
The game was the Pride's first triple overtime contest since a 96-92 win over Northeastern on January 21, 2016.
Behind 15 first-point points from Wright-Foreman, Hofstra took a 10-point lead into the break at 38-28. The Pride used a half-closing 15-2 run and scored the final eight points of the stanza to take the double-digit lead. William & Mary led early on, 11-4, before the Pride gradually chipped away and eventually took their first lead at 28-26 following a three-pointer from junior
Eli Pemberton.
A three-pointer from junior
Tareq Coburn pushed the lead to 14, 43-29, less than a minute into the second half before William & Mary mounted a rally. The Tribe would put together a 20-5 run over the next nearly six minutes to retake the lead at 49-48 after a layup from Luke Loewe.
The game would be knotted at 61 with 5:45 left in the second half before Hofstra regained the lead with a driving layup from Ray at the 4:47 mark. William & Mary would send the game to the first overtime tied at 69 as they evened the score with 32 seconds left in regulation on a three-pointer from Matt Milon.
After two overtimes couldn't decide a winner, the two teams that have played a multitude of epic games over the past few years, would head to triple overtime. Pemberton opened the scoring and a basket from Wright-Foreman made it 86-84 in favor of the Pride with 2:33 left. Nathan Knight would answer 30 seconds later for the Tribe with an old-fashioned three-point play to put William & Mary ahead 87-86. At that point, Ray stepped up once again and drained a three-pointer to make it 89-87 in favor of the Pride with 37 seconds left. Hofstra would then clamp down defensively, including a block from graduate student
Dan Dwyer on the ensuing possession, and senior
Desure Buie hit a pair of free throws to seal the win.
Pemberton added 14 points for Hofstra, while Coburn chipped in with 13 points and five rebounds. Buie had eight assists, six points and four steals. Graduate student
Jacquil Taylor tallied 12 rebounds in the contest.
Knight led William & Mary with 31 points and added 10 rebounds. Justin Pierce added 24 points and 15 rebounds for the Tribe.
Hofstra is back in action when it heads to Elon on Saturday for a 7 p.m. contest.
