Jan Leithner and freshman
Shawn Jackson each won their first round pre-qualifying matches at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American Championships, becoming the first two Hofstra Tennis players to record victories in a national ITA-sanctioned event.
Leithner picked up the win in a 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 victory over Kenneth Boykin of Oral Roberts. Jackson followed with a straight set win over San Diego State's Arnaud Restifo, 6-2, 6-3. Restifo was one of the top youth players in France and was world-ranked by the ATP.
Both players would lose their second round matches with Leithner falling to Joe Tyler of Iowa, 6-2, 6-1, and Jackson falling in three sets to Michael Ogden of North Carolina State, 6-1, 4-6, 1-6.
In other action at the ITA All-American Championships, senior
Coco Haener lost his opening round match to South Alabama's Sacha Modica, 6-1, 6-2; and senior
Marcus Smith, who had a first-
round bye as a 17-32 seed, fell to Sander Anderson of San Diego State, 6-3, 6-4. Both Haener and Smith will play in the consolation round on Sunday.
