MTEN: Hofstra Picks Up Dual Match Win At NYIT

Syosset, NY - The Hofstra University Men's Tennis team picked up its first dual match win of the season with a 5-2 victory over NYIT at Sportime Syosset.
 
Hofstra (1-0) took all three doubles matches in earning that point and followed up by winning four of six singles flights as well against the Bears (1-1)
 
The team of Coco Haener and Shawn Jackson got things rolling with a 6-0 victory against the NYIT team of Yago Granda and Raul Guillen at the No. 2 flight. The Pride duo picked up right where they left off after winning the Hofstra Invitational title this past weekend to move to 5-0 on the season. Jan Leithner and Marcus Smith clinched the point with a 6-3 win at No. 1 over Nicolas Castaldo and Maxton Cook. The Pride completed the sweep with a win by Giacomo Pezzoli and Ryan Hardin at the No. 3 flight, 6-4, over Francisco Caldas and Sergio Fernandez. 
 
Singles play saw Haener open with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Granda at No. 3. Pezzoli followed with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 5 over Kevin Huynh to give Hofstra a 3-0 lead in the match. Smith clinched the team win at No 1 with a 6-7 (7), 6-1, 6-3 victory against Castaldo. Jackson, who won a singles flight championship at the Hofstra Invitational, upped his record to 5-0 after downing Fernandez at No. 4, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. 
 
NYIT was able to pick up wins at No. 2 (Caldas) and No. 6 (Guillen) to claim its two points. 
 
Hofstra is back in action as a team at the Farnsworth Invitational at Princeton University on October 5. The Pride will have four players – Smith, Leithner, Haener and Jackson – competing at the ITA All-American National Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma, beginning September 29.
