Shawn Jackson won the "C" Singles flight and teamed with senior
Coco Haener to win the "B" Doubles flight as the Hofstra Pride Invitational concluded Saturday at the Hofstra Tennis Courts. In addition, the Pride had two singles flight runners-up – freshmen
Giacomo Pezzoli and
Ryan Hardin – and a consolation flight champion (
Jan Leithner).
Jackson completed his first weekend in a Pride uniform with a 4-0 record as he defeated Jose Zurro Polverosa of Queens, 6-2, 3-6, 10-8, in the semifinals and his Pride teammate Pezzoli in the finals, 6-3, 6-3. Pezzoli reached the finals in his first tournament by downing Ilya Kneppelhout of Wagner in the semifinals, 7-6 (2), 6-2.
Hardin also had an impressive debut as he defeated Stanislas Bedrune (Queens), 6-3, 0-6, 10-4, in the semifinals before falling in the finals to Siddharth Anand (Wagner), 6-1, 6-3.
Haener and Jackson cruised through the doubles draw, defeating Wagner's Lucas Gonzalez and Kneppelhout, 7-5, in the semifinals and Sagar Bains and Alex Giannakitsidis of Siena in the finals, 6-2.
Leithner won a pair of matches Saturday in the "A" back draw to win the consolation championship. The senior downed FDU's Moric Budzinsky, 8-2, before winning by walkover (injury) against Niklas Pietsch of FDU in the finals.
In other Hofstra action Saturday,
Marcus Smith dropped his "A" semifinals match to Wagner's Dylan Walters, 3-6, 6-3, 10-2. Haener suffered a 6-1, 6-3 loss to Richard Sec of Queens on the "B" Semifinals. Smith and Leithner dropped their "A" Doubles semifinal to Anatoliy Lashkul and Dale Sandy of Wagner, 6-3.
Hofstra returns to action Wednesday when it plays at NYIT at 2 p.m.
