Laura Masciullo had a career-high 28 kills, including the 1,000th of her spectacular career, but the Hofstra Volleyball team fell in five sets to Columbia on Saturday morning at the David S. Mack Physical Education Center.
The Pride fell to 9-4 with the loss, while Columbia improved to 6-3. Set scores were 25-21, 25-21, 13-25, 17-25, 15-13 in favor of the Lions.
Masciullo tallied her 1,000th kill midway through the first set on her way to one of her career-defining matches as she hit .511 for the match with the 28 kills on 47 swings and only four errors. She also added eight digs and two blocks. Freshman
Aisha Skinner added 14 kills and 14 digs, while senior
Michela Rucli posted 14 kills as well.
Hofstra rallied back from a 2-0 deficit in the match to send it into the fifth and final set but was unable to complete the rally as Columbia hit over .300 in the fifth set to capture the win.
Hofstra will conclude tournament play later tonight when the Pride hosts Seton Hall at 7 p.m.
NOTES
- Hofstra is now 3-2 all-time against Columbia. Today marked the first meeting since 2014.
- Masciullo's previous career-high of 27 kills came against Charleston on September 22, 2017.
- Masciullo is the 16th player in program history to reach 1,000 career kills and first since Veronika Kostova in 2016.
