VB: Hofstra Cruises Past St. John’s

Jamaica, NY - Junior Laura Masciullo posted a match-high 14 kills, while junior Luisa Sydlik tallied 31 assists and 10 digs to lead the Hofstra Volleyball team to a sweep of local rival St. John's on Tuesday evening at Carnesecca Arena. 

Hofstra, which won for the eighth time in 11 matches, improved to 8-3 this season. The Red Storm fell to 8-4. Set scores were 25-22, 25-23 and 25-19.

It was a balanced offensive attack for the Pride which had five players with at least three kills. Hofstra hit over .200 in the match, while holding St. John's to a .135 attack percentage. A pair of Pride players had double figures in digs as Sydlik was joined by freshman Maddie Appleton, who led the team with 12 digs. Efronsini Alexakou and Rachele Rastelli each had 11 kills for St. John's, which also got 31 assists and 12 digs from Erica Di Maulo. 

Hofstra is back in action this weekend when it hosts the Hofstra Invitational. The Pride will open tournament play on Friday when Hofstra faces Dartmouth at 6 p.m. 

NOTES
- Hofstra is now 9-9 all-time against St. John's. Tonight was the first meeting between the teams since 2010. 
- With her 14 kills, Masciullo now has 977 kills in her career and needs just 23 to become the 16th member of the 1,000-Kills Club at Hofstra. 
- With the win, Hofstra improved to 112-33 all-time against teams from New York State. 
- Appleton has now reached double figures in digs in six straight matches.
