Hempstead, N.Y. – The Hofstra Women's Soccer team took a dramatic 2-1 double-overtime win over Boston University on Thursday night at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.
With time ticking down in regulation and the Pride in need of a goal, senior
Monique Iannella sent in a corner kick. Classmate
Madeline Anderson got on the other end of it, heading it in to knot the score at one with just 20 seconds remaining in the second half and force overtime. Hofstra then stole the momentum, dominating in overtime and capitalizing just over a minute into the second extra frame, once again on a corner. Sophomore
Jordan Littleboy sent the ball in, and senior
Jenn Buoncore headed it towards goal, with sophomore
Lucy Porter putting the finishing touch on it.
With the win, the Pride moves to 2-1 on the season while the Terriers drop to 0-3.
BU had a number of chances in the first half, outshooting Hofstra, 5-2, before the Terriers found the back of the net in the 65th minute on a Royce Light header off a free kick.
But the Pride responded, putting up 12 shots to BU's three through the second half and both overtime periods, including six in the first overtime. Sophomore
Megan Fisher also had a chance to win it for Hofstra in the first extra frame, heading a corner just over the crossbar.
The Pride has a week hiatus before it returns to action, heading to Fordham for a 7 p.m. tilt on Aug. 30 to kick off a five-game road swing.
Notes:
-Anderson and Porter's goals were both their first of the season.
-Buoncore, Littleboy and Iannella each picked up assists for their first points of the year.
-After picking up its first win over BU in 2016, Hofstra has now won the past three meetings between the sides.
