Hempstead, N.Y. – The Hofstra Women's Soccer team fell to Fairfield, 1-0, in the Pride's home opener on Sunday afternoon at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.
Hofstra (1-1) outshot the Stags (2-0) by a dramatic margin of 15-4, but Fairfield's goal in the 53rd minute served as the difference-maker. Hanley Courter capitalized on a defensive miscue and found the back of the net from just outside the 18-yard box.
Trailing 1-0, the Pride turned up the heat in the second half, creating a flurry of chances, with Fairfield goalkeeper Aytana Muschjew tipping a
Lucy Porter header up over the crossbar. A moment later, sophomore
Sabrina Bryan played a ball through to senior
Jenn Buoncore, who got in behind the Stags backline, but Muschjew stripped Buoncore of the ball to keep Hofstra off the board.
The Pride remains home for a weeknight contest with Boston University at 7 p.m. on Thursday at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.
