BB: Hofstra Falls To Northeastern In Series Opener

Hempstead, NY – John Rooney pitched seven innings, allowing two runs, and Vito Friscia went 3-4 with a solo home run in Hofstra's 5-1 Colonial Athletic Association loss to Northeastern Friday afternoon at University Field. The victory extended Northeastern's winning streak to 11 games.
 
Hofstra slipped to 21-17 overall and 10-9 in the CAA with the loss. The Huskies improved to 29-13 on the year and 13-3 in the CAA. 
 
Tyler Brown (6-3) outdueled Rooney, allowing six hits over seven frames with eight strikeouts. Andrew Misiaszek pitched the final two innings and picked up his ninth save. Ryan Solomon had a solo home run that put Northeastern up, 1-0, in the sixth inning while Ian Fair made it 2-0 with an RBI single in the seventh. The Huskies added three more runs in the ninth as Mason Koppens had an RBI single and Jake Farrell knocked in a pair with a double.
 
Friscia broke up the shutout bid in the ninth as he led off with a solo blast, his sixth of the season, off Misiaszek.  The junior designated hitter also had a single and a double in the game.
 
Rooney (7-1) suffered his first loss of the season after allowing two runs on seven hits. He struck out seven, walked two and hit two batters. 
 
The teams continue the series Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
 
Notes:
-The home run allowed by Rooney snapped a 49 1/3-inning streak of not allowing an earned run.
-Mikey Riesner extended his hitting streak to nine games with a double. 
-Hofstra is now 6-6 at home this season.
