Hempstead, N.Y. – The Hofstra Softball team picked up two more dominant Colonial Athletic Association wins, topping Charleston, 11-1 in five innings and 10-2 in six innings, in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Bill Edwards Stadium.
Five different players hit home runs on the day as the Pride improved to 23-8 and stayed unbeaten in CAA play at 8-0. The Cougars dropped to 22-17 and 3-5 in the league.
Game 1
Junior
Courtney Scarpato hit a double in the bottom of the first to drive in two runs before a Dexlie Inman homer brought Charleston back within one in the top of the third.
Hofstra then exploded for nine runs in the top of the fourth for the convincing victory. Senior
Megan Patierno led off with a single to left field before freshman
Kimberly Wert singled and advanced to third, with Patierno cashing in on an error in left field. Redshirt-senior
Michaela Transue walked to put runners on the corners, with sophomore
Kristin Hallam's double bringing Wert home. Senior
Brielle Pietrafesa cleared the bases with a three-run shot to left field. With two outs, senior
Sarah Edwards and Scarpato both walked, before back-to-back homers from Patierno and senior
Nikki Michalowski capped the nine-run outburst for an 11-1 Hofstra lead.
Sophomore pitcher
Sarah Cornell (13-5) then retired the side in order in the top of the fifth for the run-rule win.
Game 2
The Pride once again took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first in Game 2, with senior
Brittany Allocca doubling and Scarpato singling to drive in runs.
The Cougars were once again quick to answer, knotting the score at two in the top of the second, capitalizing on an error.
Transue gave Hofstra the lead back in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single to bring Michalowski home.
The Pride then hit back-to-back home runs for the second time with Allocca and Edwards going yard in the bottom of the third for a 5-2 Hofstra advantage.
Pietrafesa hit her second long ball of the day, scoring Hallam, in the bottom of the sixth. Allocca then walked before Edwards singled and Scarpato added another RBI double. Michalowski's single up the middle then ended the game as Scarpato came home for the eight-run margin.
Freshman pitcher
Sophie Dandola (10-3) had another strong outing in the circle, allowing no earned runs and striking out three.
The Pride closes the series with Charleston on Sunday with a single game at 12 p.m. at Bill Edwards Stadium.
Notes:
-Scarpato and Pietrafesa both finished the day with five RBIs.
-Allocca moved into a tie for fourth on the program's all-time career home runs list with 29, while Pietrafesa moved into sole possession of sixth with 28.
-The Pride finished the day with a .426 team batting average, while holding the Cougars to just a .195 clip.
