BB: Hofstra Blanks Delaware Behind Rooney And 17-Hit Performance

Hempstead, NY - The Hofstra offense erupted for a season-high 17 hits to back the complete game shutout from pitcher John Rooney as the Pride posted a 9-0 win over Delaware Friday afternoon in the opening game of a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series at University Field.

Hofstra snapped a three-game losing skid with the win and improved to 13-9 overall and 3-4 in the CAA. Delaware slipped to 13-13 overall and 2-2 in league play with its fourth consecutive loss.

Rooney (5-0) allowed just two hits (both singles) and walked one while recording 11 strikeouts in a 102-pitch performance. The junior got all the run support he needed in the first inning as Rob Weissheier scored on a fielding error after moving from first to third on a single from Teddy Cillis. But the Pride did not settle for the one run, adding two more in the second inning on RBI doubles from Mikey Riesner and Matt Siedem. Hofstra would add three more runs in the fourth, including an RBI single from Siedem, and then tacked on two more in the sixth and another in the seventh on Siedem's first collegiate home run.

Eight of the nine batters in the Hofstra lineup had hits, with Cillis leading the way with a 4-4 performance that included two doubles. Siedem and Austin Gauthier each had three hits, while Parker Quinn and Steven Foster both smacked a pair of doubles.

Colman Vila (2-2) started for Delaware and took the loss, allowing three runs on five hits over three innings of work. Nick Patten and Tyler Callender had the Delaware hits.

The teams continue the series Saturday at 3 p.m. The game time has been changed from 1 p.m. due to potential overnight snow on Long Island.
